Paper Piecing Lessons

It's been a helter-skelter weekend!  On Friday panic set in big time as the beck which runs alongside our house started rising very quickly.  There was no let up in the rain as I watched general detritus and tree trunks going down to the River Lune... my thoughts were turning to moving stuff upstairs for fear of flooding.  Fortunately after high tide more water was able to get down to the river and out to sea, so the level went down.  I did get up repeatedly in the night to check the water level when it was high tide again, but we seem to be past the worst.  Thank goodness we weren't flooded... my crafting corner is downstairs!!  No prizes for guessing what I'd have moved upstairs first!

Today there is blue sky and the sun is shining.  Unbelievable!  I've spent a pleasant couple of hours at my desk crafting.  Here's what I've made for the paper piecing challenge over at Less is More:

Aren't they cute?  Normally this stamp set is £41.95 but I got it for free!  Email me to ask me how!  All the heads, bodies and feet are interchangeable meaning you can create any little group of people you like.  I have *big* plans for this set!  You'd have thought though that my brain would have registered the size of these stamps and pointed out that a slightly bigger stamp would have been more suitable for paper piecing, but apparently not.  Duh!  Anyway, paper piecing is pretty useful for using up snippets so I'll be playing in Di's Snippet Playground with this card as well... in fact if I'm really organised I could make a miniature card of the playmates with this stamp set!  There's a thought...

Supplies
Stamps: All in the Family; Up, Up & Away (for the birds)
Ink: Basic Black, marker pens in Crumb Cake, Pumpkin Pie, Tempting Turquoise, Real Red, Basic Black, Melon Mambo and Pretty in Pink
Card: Whisper White
Paper: Pumpkin Pie, Tempting Turquoise, Daffodil Delight, Melon Mambo from the Brights Designer Series Paper stack; Basic Black, Crumb Cake from the Neutrals Designer Series Paper stack
Other: stamp-a-ma-jig - absolutely essential with this stamp set!

I gather there is an important football match tonight.  Neither my husband nor I follow football so we will not be watching.  In 2006, however, I was completing the Tour du Mont Blanc, a 9 or 10 day hike around the central Mont Blanc massif, which involved climbing seven mountain passes and passing through three countries.  (An amazing experience which you should do if you like walking!)  On the night of the World Cup Final we found ourselves in a high alpine refuge in Italy, while the majority of the other hikers were French.  At such altitude there was no TV and the only place to get radio reception was outside in the far corner of the balcony.  I had to smile as the very determined French and Italian hikers and refuge workers trekked outside with blankets and the precious radio to listen to the match.  We remained huddled inside... we were directly opposite a glacier so no way were we sitting out in the cold!  Italy won in penalties, and when we came for breakfast early the next morning, the entire refuge had been decorated in Italian flags!  Quite a surreal experience.

Anyway, enough wittering.  I hope you are dry and safe from bad weather.  Thanks for visiting!

I'm glad the rising waters didn't cause you any more distress. Here we are battle flood waters too and several places have been put on alert to evacuate. Our weather has been dreadful for the month of June. Stay safe my friend. Carole xox

  15. Just picked myself up off te floor from seeing the price of the stamp!!! Does it stamp in gold? Glad to hear you didn't have to save your crafting goodies along with the stamp of course. We live right next to a flood pond which fills up to a very scary level about 12ft from your fence when it downpours really heavily. Great bit of paper piecing. Very fidly on small areas. Can I be in pink wih yellow hair please? Hugs Mrs A.

  28. This is just as cute as can be, Victoria! I especially like the stripey cat!

But I'm so sorry to hear of your fright with the near flooding. That was too close for comfort! I hope you never have to go through that again. Not that you couldn't outrun it, sounds like, with all that experience hiking. And what an experience doing the Tour du Mont Blanc! Here's me tipping my hat to you!!

  35. Love your stick people Victoria, can't wait to see what you have in store for them!!
Sounds quite a tense time with the brook rising, amazing how a peaceful flow can become a raging torrent so quickly.
I'd definitely have to save my stash too although we have no upstairs to retreat too!
